OpenAI fires back at Elon Musk’s lawsuit, reveals he wanted ‘full control’ of company | Technology News

From Indian Express:

OpenAI is embroiled in a legal battle with co-founder Elon Musk, who sued the company for deviating from its original mission. Emails released by OpenAI show Musk pushing for the company to merge with Tesla, contradicting the non-profit’s goal of developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) for humanity.

The disagreement between Musk and OpenAI began in 2017 when the company decided to create a for-profit arm to raise funds. Musk wanted majority ownership and control of the board, which went against the company’s core principles. OpenAI eventually parted ways with Musk over the restructuring, leading to the current conflict.

In response to Musk’s lawsuit, OpenAI expressed disappointment in the situation, stating they once deeply admired him. Musk claims the company strayed from its original mission of beneficial AGI development. OpenAI accuses Musk of inspiring them only to later doubt them, start a rival company, and sue when they made progress.

The legal dispute between Musk and OpenAI comes shortly after the company, along with other tech giants, pledged to develop AI responsibly and minimize risks to society. The pledge, signed by over 30 companies including Salesforce and Musk’s Twitter, emphasizes the collective responsibility in advancing AI technology.
