OpenAI has developed Voice Engine technology capable of cloning a person’s voice with just 15 seconds of recording. However, due to safety concerns, the company has not publicly released the technology and plans to preview it with early testers. The goal is to prevent misuse, especially during the election year, as seen with AI-generated robocalls mimicking President Joe Biden.

While several startup companies offer voice-cloning technology, OpenAI’s approach includes agreements with testers to not impersonate individuals without consent. The company’s trademark filing suggests a push into speech recognition and digital voice assistants, potentially positioning OpenAI to compete with products like Amazon’s Alexa in the future.
