OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, is expanding its reach in Asia by opening an office in Tokyo this month. The company aims to provide tailored corporate services and contribute to developing a governance framework for the technology, particularly in Japan, where CEO Sam Altman previously met with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

The move comes after OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT, a generative AI tool that gained global attention. CEO Sam Altman’s meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo last April indicated the company’s interest in establishing a presence in the country. Now, OpenAI is looking to further engage with Japan’s market and regulatory landscape.
