An investigation by law firm WilmerHale found that Sam Altman’s conduct “did not mandate his removal” from OpenAI last year. The firing was due to a breakdown in trust with the previous board. Altman will now rejoin the board along with three new members to address governance issues and improve transparency.

Sam Altman expressed regret over how he handled disagreements at OpenAI and acknowledged the need for better communication. Former board members who voted to fire Altman emphasized the importance of accountability in governing potentially world-changing technology, urging the new board to prioritize oversight and ethical practices in AI development.
