Salvage crews worked to lift the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore to reopen the port. Six workers died when a ship collided with the bridge, blocking the shipping channel. Maryland Governor Wes Moore announced plans to remove a section of the bridge for clearance and recovery efforts continue.
The bodies of two workers have been recovered, but four others remain missing in the debris. Operations to remove debris from the Patapsco River must be completed before the container ship that caused the collapse can be moved. Maryland received $60 million in emergency funds for debris removal and bridge reconstruction.
Tradepoint Atlantic, a former steel mill site being developed into a distribution center, is assisting in the salvage operation. The port facility is fully operational and allowing other ships to unload vehicles. Meanwhile, a bridge over the Arkansas River was struck by a barge, prompting its closure for inspection, impacting local traffic.
