Shareholder payouts hit a record $1.7 trillion last year as bank profits surged

Global dividend payouts hit a record $1.66 trillion in 2023, with a 5% year-on-year rise and 7.2% in Q4. The banking sector led growth, but mining sector cuts dampened gains. Large companies like BHP, Intel, and AT&T reduced global growth by two percentage points. 86% of listed companies raised or maintained dividends in 2023.

Emerging market banks boosted dividend growth, while China’s banks did not participate. Record payouts were seen in 22 countries, with Europe showing a 10.4% increase in dividends. Janus Henderson predicts total dividends to reach $1.72 trillion in 2024, with underlying growth at 5%. Europe was described as a “key engine of growth” for dividends.
