Stock market today: World markets are mixed and Japan’s Nikkei tops 40,000, on eve of China congress

Global stocks showed mixed performance leading up to China’s National People’s Congress. Japan’s Nikkei 225 reached 40,000 for the first time. Other Asian markets followed suit, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng and Shanghai Composite also seeing gains. The S&P 500 set a new high and the Fed is closely watching inflation for rate decisions. Oil prices rose slightly, and the U.S. dollar strengthened against the yen and euro.
