Top websites can block Google from training AI models, concerns about exclusion from future outputs.
From Yahoo:
Google has launched a new tool called Google-Extended, allowing websites to block the company from using their content for training AI models. While some top-ranking websites have implemented this tool, usage remains lower than similar data-blockers like GPTBot and CCBot. Concerns include the risk of exclusion from future AI model outputs.
The New York Times has also enabled the Google-Extended blocker in response to the heated AI wars and blocked OpenAI’s access to its content. Other companies such as CNN, BBC, Yelp, and Business Insider have followed suit. Despite concerns about exclusion from Google’s AI model training data, the use of Google-Extended does not currently impact website rankings on Google Search.
The future of the web in this new AI landscape remains uncertain, with Google testing a new genAI-powered version of Search called Search Generative Experience. This tool may have implications for how websites are ranked in search results moving forward. Axel Springer, the parent company of Business Insider, has a global deal with OpenAI to train AI models on its media brands’ reporting.
