US takes on Apple in antitrust lawsuit

From Nasdaq:

The U.S. Department of Justice and 15 states are suing Apple, alleging the tech giant used its market power to increase prices and harm competition. This marks a major antitrust effort against Apple by the Biden administration.

The lawsuit accuses Apple of exploiting its smartphone monopoly to extract more money from consumers, developers, content creators, and small businesses. The goal is to restore competition, lower smartphone prices, and reduce fees for developers.

Apple denies the allegations, claiming the lawsuit threatens its ability to deliver innovative products in competitive markets. The company’s shares dropped by 3% following news of the lawsuit.

Apple has faced antitrust probes and orders in various countries, including Europe, Japan, and Korea. The company’s App Store, which charges developers up to 30% commission, has been a focal point of scrutiny and legal challenges.

Some of the complaints against Apple include restrictions on third-party access to iPhone sensors and hardware, limiting competition from companies like Tile Inc. Apple has also faced criticism for its exclusive iMessage service and the restrictions it places on alternative payment methods.
