Amazon Web Services, the largest cloud-service provider, owes tech company Kove $525 million for patent violations in data-storage technology, according to an Illinois federal jury. Kove claims the patents are crucial to AWS’ ability to store and retrieve massive amounts of data. AWS denied the allegations, arguing the patents were invalid.

Representatives for Amazon did not immediately respond to the jury’s verdict. Kove’s lead attorney called the decision a win for innovation and protecting IP rights. Kove sued Amazon in 2018, alleging AWS’ storage and database services infringed their cloud-storage patents. The jury agreed with Kove that AWS infringed all three patents.

Kove previously sued Google last year for similar patent infringement claims which is still ongoing in Illinois. Courtland Reichman, Kove’s lead attorney, emphasized the importance of protecting IP rights for start-up companies against tech giants like Amazon. Kove’s lawsuit against Amazon dates back to 2018 and claims technology enabling high-performance cloud storage.
