Ecuador raided Mexican embassy to arrest former VP, sparking diplomatic dispute

Mexico abruptly suspended bilateral relations with Ecuador after Ecuador’s police forcibly entered Mexico’s Quito embassy to arrest former vice president Jorge Glas on graft charges. Glas had been living in the embassy since December and was granted asylum by Mexico just before the arrest, sparking a diplomatic dispute.

Glas, a former vice president during Rafael Correa’s government and convicted twice on corruption charges, is now facing new charges of misusing public resources. His case has sparked criticism from governments across Latin America, with Brazil and Argentina condemning Ecuador’s violation of international norms regarding embassies.

Mexico plans to file a complaint with the International Court of Justice, while Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro seeks human rights protections for Glas. The Organization of American States will convene to discuss the need for compliance with international treaties amid the escalating diplomatic dispute.
