The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is probing claims by a Boeing whistleblower alleging the company ignored safety concerns in the production of its 787 and 777 jets. Boeing engineer Sam Salehpour flagged structural issues and alleged shortcuts in the assembly process, leading to a pause in 787 deliveries until August 2022.

Boeing acknowledged quality problems with some 787 airplanes in 2021, including incorrect sized shims and areas not meeting specifications for skin flatness. The company defended the Dreamliner’s safety and quality assurance efforts, dismissing the whistleblower’s allegations as inaccurate.

Boeing stock dipped 1.6% to $178.65 following news of the FAA investigation, initially reported by the New York Times. The agency confirmed meeting with the whistleblower Salehpour, whose attorneys claim the company prioritized speed to market over addressing known issues in the jets.

Salehpour’s lawyers criticized Boeing for rushing the planes to market despite well-documented concerns, pushing for addressing safety issues before prioritizing speed. The FAA recently approved the first Boeing 787 Dreamliner for delivery since 2021, after inspection changes satisfied certification standards.
