Japan stocks closed lower, with Nikkei 225 down 0.90%, led by top losers in pharmaceuticals

Japan stocks closed lower on Monday, with the Nikkei 225 declining 0.90%. Top gainers included Tokyo Electric Power Co., Kansai Electric Power, and Mitsubishi Materials, while Astellas Pharma, Takashimaya, and Sumitomo Dainippon Pharma were among the biggest losers. Tokyo Electric Power Co. reached 5-year highs, while Astellas Pharma hit 3-year lows.

The Nikkei Volatility Index dropped 3.67% to 19.97, indicating lowered volatility for Nikkei 225 options. Crude oil prices fell slightly, with May delivery down 0.51% to $85.22 per barrel. Gold futures for June rose 0.03% to $2,374.90 per troy ounce. USD/JPY was up 0.35% at 153.82, and EUR/JPY rose 0.75% to 163.99.

In commodities trading, Brent oil for June delivery fell 0.45% to $90.04 per barrel. The US Dollar Index Futures dipped 0.14% to 105.68. Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, with 2252 declining compared to 1406 advancing and 221 remaining unchanged.
