Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg has some claims dismissed in lawsuits accusing him of hiding the harm Facebook and Instagram pose to children. U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ruled in a case where children allege Meta and other social media companies addicted them.
Plaintiffs in 25 cases sought to hold Zuckerberg personally liable, claiming he misled the public about platform safety despite knowing the risks to children. However, the judge said they couldn’t rely on Zuckerberg’s knowledge to establish a duty. Meta declined to comment, denying any wrongdoing in the hundreds of lawsuits.
Numerous lawsuits are ongoing against Meta and other social media companies, alleging physical, mental, and emotional harm to children from social media use. The litigation seeks damages and changes to harmful practices, with states and school districts also filing lawsuits against Meta. Actions remain pending amidst the ongoing legal battle.
