March US CPI Report Shows Higher Than Expected…

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a 3.5% rise in the US Consumer Price Index in March from a year ago, up from February’s 3.2%. Core CPI, excluding food and energy costs, increased by 3.8% in March and February. CPI and Core CPI both rose a matching 0.4% from the previous month.

March CPI was expected to increase by 0.3% from the prior month, but rose 0.4% instead. Year-over-year forecasts predicted a 3.4% rise in CPI and a 3.7% increase for CPI excluding food and energy. Food prices rose 0.1% in March, with restaurant prices up by 0.3%.

Energy prices showed mixed results in March, following a 2.3% increase the previous month. Shelter prices were up by 0.4% in March, consistent with the previous month. The data was generated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and reviewed by Morningstar editors.
