Microsoft and OpenAI announce $115B AI supercomputer campus project, Stargate, to be one of the largest and most expensive data center projects. The project, in Phase 3 of a 5-phase plan, is projected for completion by 2028. Stargate aims to accommodate an enormous amount of power, up to 5 gigawatts.

AI and data center demand are increasing rapidly, putting a strain on the U.S. power grid. Data centers consumed 19GW last year and expected to hit 25GW by 2026, requiring alternatives like nuclear power. Elderly grids are slowing down projects like Stargate, proposing issues for the future AI infrastructure’s growth.

Surge in AI infrastructure demands funding and support, with the government’s CHIPS Act allocating billions to Intel for semiconductor factories. $8.5B was awarded in the latest round, being a part of the larger plan to boost US semiconductor manufacturing. More funding for similar projects is anticipated in upcoming months.
