Microsoft Azure’s version of OpenAI’s image generator, DALL-E, was presented as a potential battlefield tool for the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). Microsoft hoped to leverage the military’s interest in generative AI for warfare, as reported by The Intercept. Azure offers OpenAI’s tools due to a $10 billion partnership.
Microsoft pitched using DALL-E’s models to create images for training battle management systems to the DoD. This was part of a presentation titled “Generative AI with DoD Data” obtained by The Intercept. While OpenAI prohibits military use citing its mission to benefit humanity, Microsoft, through Azure, is not bound by these restrictions.
Governments worldwide are increasingly turning to AI for military applications. Israel’s use of Lavender to create a “kill list” in Gaza and American military’s experiments with large language models for military tasks demonstrate this trend. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt’s AI kamikaze drones project, White Stork, further illustrates tech’s militarization.
The tech industry, led by figures like Eric Schmidt, is capitalizing on the financial benefits of AI military applications. While OpenAI initially prohibited military use, its partnership with Microsoft allows it to supply AI to the American military. This shift signals AI’s growing role in modern warfare.
