Eight newspapers owned by Alden Global Capital’s MediaNews Group are suing Microsoft and OpenAI for allegedly using their content to train AI models. The newspapers, including New York Daily News and Chicago Tribune, filed suit in NY federal court. They claim the tech companies copied millions of articles without permission.
Microsoft and OpenAI are accused of training Copilot and ChatGPT with copyrighted content, with ChatGPT allegedly falsely attributing and “hallucinating” articles. MediaNews’s lawyer stated the defendants took content without permission. Microsoft declined to comment, while OpenAI stressed their support for news organizations in product design.
Frank Pine of MediaNews Group criticized OpenAI and Microsoft for “undermining the business model for news” through the misappropriation of content. The New York Times previously sued the tech companies in 2023 for similar copyright infringement. OpenAI has engaged in licensing agreements with other publishers, including AP, to use their content for ChatGPT training.
