Microsoft and OpenAI are discussing a $100 billion project called “Stargate” to build a supercomputer data center in the U.S. The project aims to support OpenAI’s advanced AI models and will be built in five phases, with a significant portion of the cost going towards acquiring AI chips.
Since March 2023, Microsoft has been using Nvidia chips to power OpenAI, but there are reports of Microsoft introducing its own customized AI chips, the Azure Maia 100 and Cobalt 100. The Stargate project is expected to be the largest in a series of supercomputing data centers, designed with over 5 gigawatts of power and millions of processors for AI workloads.
The $100 billion price tag for the Stargate project is triple what Microsoft spent last year on buildings, servers, and equipment. Microsoft’s close partnership with OpenAI began in 2019 with a $1 billion investment, and to date, Microsoft has invested over $13 billion in OpenAI. The project is expected to be completed by 2028, depending on OpenAI’s ability to deliver a superior GPT-5 model that requires advanced computing power.
