Microsoft backed OpenAI has opened its first Asia office in Tokyo, aiming to establish a long-term partnership in Japan. The startup, known for its ChatGPT AI chatbot, is eyeing global revenue growth, with a focus on attracting Fortune 500 companies. CEO Sam Altman and COO Brad Lightcap are leading the charge.
With an eye on competing with China and improving digital services, Japan is embracing AI technology. OpenAI, with a custom Japanese language model, is betting on Japan’s potential. Tadao Nagasaki, former head of Amazon Web Services in Japan, leads the startup’s Japan operations with key clients including Toyota and Daikin.
Japan, traditionally seen as a technology laggard, is ramping up investments in AI. SoftBank and NTT are among the companies pushing for large language models. Microsoft recently announced a $2.9 billion investment in cloud and AI infrastructure in Japan, reflecting a trend of increased tech investments globally.
