OpenAI has opened its first office in Tokyo, Japan, as part of a strategy to expand globally and establish partnerships with local businesses and institutions. The Tokyo office, led by Tadao Nagasaki, will focus on commercial engagements and will introduce a custom GPT-4 model tailored for the Japanese language to enhance translation and summarization tasks.
CEO Sam Altman expressed excitement in Japan’s innovative culture, emphasizing AI’s potential to empower creativity and productivity. OpenAI plans to release the custom GPT-4 model in its API soon, with initial applications showing significant improvements. Following a meeting with Japan’s prime minister in 2023, Altman considered opening the office, which has now been established in Tokyo, London, and Dublin.
In Japan, local governments like Yokosuka City are utilizing ChatGPT to enhance public services. Nearly all city employees have access to ChatGPT, with 80% reporting increased productivity. Yokosuka City has also formed a network with 21 local governments to share best practices for using ChatGPT in government services, showcasing AI’s potential for efficiency gains.
