OpenAI appoints Tadao Nagasaki, former head of Amazon Web Services in Japan, to lead its expansion in the country with a Tokyo office and a custom GPT-4 for Japanese speakers. The office aims to serve OpenAI’s two million weekly active users in Japan, including clients like Daikin, Rakuten, and Toyota affiliates.

Microsoft announces a nearly $3 billion investment in AI projects in Japan, including expanding cloud and AI infrastructure, training 3 million people in AI, and establishing a Microsoft Research Asia lab in Tokyo. This represents Microsoft’s largest investment in Japan, with plans to add advanced AI semiconductors and focus on robotics and AI research.
