Hollywood performers and media professionals have secured a tentative deal with major record labels such as Warner Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment. The agreement includes salary increases, AI protections, and covers 2021-2026. SAG-AFTRA, representing 160,000 members, unanimously approved the deal, addressing concerns about generative AI in music creation.

The deal requires consent and compensation for digital replicas of artists’ voices in songs. Terms like “artist” and “singer” will now exclusively refer to humans in the music industry. SAG-AFTRA aims to protect members, emphasizing the importance of genuine human expression in music creation. Health, retirement benefits, and streaming revenue contributions will also improve.

A final vote for ratification by members is expected in the coming weeks. The agreement was born out of concerns over generative AI use in music and sets guidelines for the industry to respect artists’ voices. SAG-AFTRA’s focus on protecting human expression in music creation is at the core of this deal with major record labels.
