Republican U.S. lawmakers criticized the Biden administration for allowing Huawei to unveil an AI-powered laptop using an Intel chip. Huawei, placed on a trade restriction list in 2019, has been receiving chips under a special license. Lawmakers are frustrated, urging the administration to stop approving technology shipments to Huawei to hinder China’s technological advancement.

Huawei’s unveiling of a new AI-enabled laptop fueled criticism and anger among Republican China hardliners, questioning the Commerce Department’s approval of chip shipments. While a preexisting license allowed Intel to ship chips to Huawei, recent restrictions on AI chip shipments to China do not apply. Pressure on the Biden administration to curb Huawei’s rise is increasing.

Despite Washington’s restrictions on Huawei’s access to U.S. technology, the company has managed to showcase technological advancements, like a new phone powered by a chip from a sanctioned Chinese chipmaker. The goal of these restrictions is to prevent Huawei from misusing U.S. technology for harmful purposes, but Republican lawmakers are calling for a halt on approving technology licenses to Huawei.
