National Transportation Safety Board chair Jennifer Homendy is committed to gaining approval for safety recommendations and scrutinizing federal agencies, as she testifies at a Senate Commerce Committee hearing on her nomination for a new term. Homendy has advocated for transportation safety improvement, with the NTSB hiring 71 new staff in 2023 and handling over 2,200 domestic and 450 foreign cases annually across all modes of transportation.

In her testimony, Homendy highlighted her involvement in investigations such as the recent Baltimore bridge collapse and the Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9 mid-air emergency. She has also pressed Boeing for more cooperation in investigations and called for aviation safety measures such as retrofitting all planes with cockpit voice recorders capturing 25 hours of data, beyond the current two-hour loop.

Homendy has also pushed for stricter safety measures in the rail industry, specifically after the Norfolk Southern train derailment incident in Ohio. She has criticized the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for not ensuring the safety of driver assistance systems like Tesla’s Autopilot, prompting Tesla to recall 2 million vehicles due to the lack of safeguards. Despite disagreements, Tesla plans to deploy software updates to encourage better adherence to driving responsibilities.
