OpenAI faces a privacy complaint in the EU for generating misinformation about individuals. The AI chatbot ChatGPT is accused of being unable to correct false information it creates. OpenAI admits to not being able to correct inaccurate information or disclose data sources. The company argues factual accuracy in large language models is still being researched.
ChatGPT has a ‘hallucination’ problem due to the lack of guarantee of showing factually correct information. The AI tool often ‘hallucinates’ or makes up answers. Users, including researchers, rely on ChatGPT but receive inaccurate information about individuals, which is deemed unacceptable.
EU law has required personal data accuracy since 1995 and it’s part of the GDPR since 2018. Individuals have the right to request rectification or deletion of false information under Article 16. Companies must disclose data and sources under Article 15’s “right to access.”
