Commodities Buck the Recent Losing Trend Vs. US Stocks and Bonds

Global markets experienced their worst month of 2024 in April, with most major asset classes retreating. Emerging markets stocks, commodities, and cash proxy were the only outliers with positive gains. US real estate investment trusts suffered the deepest loss, plummeting 7.9%. US stocks also fell, marking the first monthly decline of the year at 4.3%. Year-to-date, commodities are the top performer, up 11.0%. The Global Market Index (GMI) dropped 3.7% in April, ending its winning streak, but still holding a 2.4% gain year to date. US stocks continue to outperform with a 1-year return of over 22%.
