Russian President Vladimir Putin has nominated civilian Andrei Belousov, an economist, as the new defence minister after more than two years into the Ukraine war. Belousov, 65, has an extensive background in economics and government roles, serving as an adviser to the Russian president and as first deputy prime minister. He is known for his views on the importance of a country’s sovereignty and identity. Belousov practiced sambo and karate in his youth and is considered to be close to Putin.
