Fed’s Favorite Underlying Inflation Gauge Is Seen Cooling

The Federal Reserve’s inflation gauge is expected to show some relief, with the personal consumption expenditures price index likely rising 0.2% in April, the smallest increase this year. Chair Jerome Powell and officials are holding interest rates high until more evidence of sustained inflation is seen. The PCE price measure is projected to rise 2.7% annually, while the core metric is expected to be at 2.8%. Other data this week includes revised gross domestic product figures and the Beige Book summary. In Asia, China’s manufacturing sector and Japan’s industrial output will be in focus, along with other economic data releases. Europe may see inflation accelerating in May with the ECB signaling a rate reduction on June 6. Other key reports include Germany’s Ifo business confidence index and the ECB’s survey of inflation expectations. Central banking decisions are expected in Israel, Ghana, Mozambique, and South Africa this week, among others. Brazil and Mexico also have important economic indicators and central bank reports scheduled for release.
