Newly revealed emails show Microsoft’s concern over Google’s progress in AI, prompting a multi-billion dollar investment in OpenAI. Microsoft officials were worried about Google’s advancements and recognized the competitive edge of AI from OpenAI, DeepMind, and Google Brain.
The emails highlighted Microsoft’s lag behind in machine learning scale, with engineers taking six months to replicate Google’s BERT model. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella forwarded CTO Kevin Scott’s emails about OpenAI to CFO Amy Hood, emphasizing the importance of the investment.
Despite initial dismissal, Scott regretted underestimating OpenAI and Google’s AI progress. The email exchange, part of an antitrust case against Google, credited Gates for playing a crucial role in brokering the deal with OpenAI.
Microsoft’s collaboration with OpenAI started in 2019 with a $1 billion investment, now totaling over $13 billion. This partnership helped Microsoft outpace Google in the AI race, integrating AI features into Microsoft’s office apps, Edge, and Windows operating system.
