Amid rising carbon emissions, consumers look for renewable energy sources like wind and solar power. Only 21% of U.S. electricity comes from renewables, but growing interest is pushing for a goal of zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2035. 9.6 million customers bought 273 TWh of green energy in 2022.

Many Americans are not aware they can opt for renewable power through voluntary green power markets. Green pricing programs from power companies offer electricity from renewables at a slight premium, and some states have programs where residents can choose green power suppliers. Buying renewable energy certificates can also support renewable projects.

Consumers who opt for green power may not physically receive electricity from renewable sources due to how electricity moves through the grid. Renewable energy certificates act as an accounting system for renewable energy generation and purchase. Choosing a green power option verified by a third party can ensure that the energy purchased is truly renewable.

Various green power options, such as community choice aggregation programs, voluntary purchases of renewable energy certificates, and green power marketing programs, offer ways for consumers to support renewable energy. Despite the benefits, many Americans remain unaware of these choices, leaving room for education and growth in green energy utilization.
