The report identified the Israeli company ‘STOIC’ behind the operation, dubbed “Zero Zeno”. The report also highlighted similar operations from China, Russia, and Iran.
Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar condemned the influence campaign as a threat to democracy, targeting the BJP. OpenAI disclosed the operation targeted audiences in Canada, the US, Israel, and India. The company quickly disrupted the campaign focused on Indian elections. The network generated comments criticizing BJP and praising Congress.
The report assessed the impact of covert influence operations on a scale of 1 to 6, rating this operation as Category 2. These operations aim to manipulate public opinion without revealing true intentions. OpenAI noted that the campaigns using its models did not significantly increase audience engagement or reach. Many accounts have been disabled.
