OpenAI disrupted a covert operation aiming to influence Lok Sabha elections in India within 24 hours. The operation, called “Zero Zeno”, was run by Israeli firm STOIC. Using OpenAI’s language models, the network generated comments criticizing BJP and praising Congress. OpenAI banned accounts involved in the operation spanning multiple platforms.
The influence campaign targeted audiences in Canada, US, Israel, and later India. BJP called it a “dangerous threat” to democracy. Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar stated that BJP was the target of influence operations, misinformation, and foreign interference. OpenAI disrupted five covert operations in the last three months, part of a strategy for safe AI deployment.
