Japan stocks closed lower with the Nikkei down 0.87%. Best performers included Sompo Holdings and Konami Corp, while Tokyo Electric Power Co. and Keisei Electric Railway were among the worst. Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones, with shares in Sompo Holdings hitting 52-week highs. Crude oil prices saw a slight increase, while the USD was down against the JPY.
