Microsoft updated its Azure OpenAI Service policy to ban U.S. police from using generative AI for facial recognition. The new terms prohibit the integration with any police department for facial recognition in the U.S. or globally. This comes after criticism of potential pitfalls and racial biases when using AI for law enforcement purposes. Microsoft clarified that the ban only applies to facial recognition in the U.S. and not internationally. Other AI-related law enforcement contracts, such as working with the Pentagon, have also been reported. Additionally, Azure OpenAI Service is now available in Microsoft’s Azure Government product, with added compliance and management features for government agencies.
