In 2019, internal emails between Microsoft’s CTO, CEO, and Bill Gates expressed concerns about the company’s lack of progress in AI compared to OpenAI and Google, prompting a $1 billion partnership with OpenAI, later increased to $10 billion.

Microsoft is now developing its own AI language model, referred to as MAI-1, led by CEO Mustafa Suleyman. The model is described as larger and more expensive to train than previous models, aiming to compete with OpenAI and Google with original technology acquired from Suleyman’s previous AI startup.
