Microsoft is developing its own artificial intelligence model, MAI-1, to rival Google and OpenAI. Led by ex-Google AI chief Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft paid $650 million for Inflection’s IP rights. MAI-1 could have 500 billion parameters, surpassing Meta and Mistral’s 70 billion, and even OpenAI’s GPT-4 with over one trillion.

Microsoft declined to comment on the topic. Chief Technology Officer Kevin Scott mentioned building powerful supercomputers for OpenAI to train frontier models. MAI-1, with large computing power and training data, could be unveiled at Microsoft’s Build conference. The company has a server cluster with Nvidia GPUs ready to train the model.
