An Israeli firm, STOIC, generated comments that targeted India, criticized the BJP, and praised the Congress party. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, revealed that STOIC used their platforms for propaganda to disrupt the election process.

The operation by STOIC utilized AI models to generate and spread large quantities of comments on platforms like Telegram, X, and Instagram. OpenAI’s report titled ‘AI and Covert Influence Operations: Latest Trends’ sheds light on how AI is being used to manipulate the masses.

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrashekhar expressed concern over foreign interference and misinformation targeting BJP by Indian political parties. He deemed it a serious threat to democracy and called for a deeper investigation into these influence operations.

The revelation by OpenAI highlights the danger posed by such covert influence operations, especially during election times. Chandrashekhar believes that such information should have been made public much earlier to prevent potential manipulation during the elections.

In the midst of Lok Sabha Election 2024, the exposure of foreign interference and misinformation by OpenAI raises concerns over the integrity of the election process. The need for transparency and vigilance against such influence operations is crucial to safeguard democracy.
