Four Chinese generative AI start-ups have been valued between $1.2bn and $2.5bn in the last three months, aiming to rival US giants like OpenAI and Anthropic. Zhipu AI, Moonshot AI, MiniMax, and 01.ai are leading the charge, attracting significant investment and competing for talent. Despite lagging behind US counterparts in tech development and fundraising, China’s AI start-ups are making strides to develop homegrown alternatives. These companies have raised a total of Rmb14.3bn ($2bn) in the first four months of the year, defying a downturn in consumer tech investment. Many start-ups have not disclosed all their funding rounds to maintain a competitive edge.
