OpenAI has disbanded its team focused on the long-term risks of artificial intelligence just one year after its formation. Team members are being reassigned to other teams within the company. The team leaders, Ilya Sutskever and Jan Leike, recently departed, citing prioritization of “shiny products” over safety initiatives. OpenAI’s Superalignment team, committed to steering AI systems smarter than humans, has been dissolved. The departures come amid a crisis involving CEO Sam Altman and a recent launch of a new AI model and desktop version of ChatGPT by OpenAI.
