OpenAI is working on a tool to detect if DALL-E 3 created an image with 98% accuracy, but solely for images produced by DALL-E 3. Researchers invited to assist in tool development due to advancements in generative AI making fake image detection more challenging as technology evolves.

The image detection classifier developed by OpenAI performs well, correctly identifying DALL-E 3 generated images 98% of the time. The tool is primarily designed to tackle common modifications like compression and cropping, ensuring high performance. OpenAI intends to enhance the integrity of digital content using tamper-resistant watermarking and detection classifiers.

OpenAI is accepting applications for its image detection classifier, encouraging testing by research labs and journalists to evaluate and enhance the tool’s effectiveness. While the tool is not for detecting all image generators, tests showed it flagged a small percentage of images created by other models in the dataset. The company is also developing provenance methods like watermarking to track the origin of content.
