OpenAI’s Sora, a text-to-video AI model, will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 15 in a program showcasing five original short films. Filmmakers given early access to Sora had to follow guidelines from entertainment guilds. Tribeca CEO Jane Rosenthal emphasized the festival’s commitment to storytelling and inspired change through various mediums.

Filmmakers Bonnie Discepolo, Ellie Foumbi, Nikyatu Jusu, Reza Sixo Safai, and Michaela Ternasky-Holland participated in creating films with Sora. Discepolo focuses on genre films about women’s autonomy, while Foumbi and Jusu have backgrounds in award-winning filmmaking and feature film direction. Safai has experience in producing acclaimed films, and Ternasky-Holland is an Emmy-winning director known for socially impactful storytelling.

OpenAI recently secured licensing deals with media outlets like Vox Media, The Atlantic, and NewsCorp. After the Tribeca premiere, a panel discussion will take place discussing the importance of boundaries, challenging ideas, and innovative storytelling. OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap expressed excitement for the debuting short films and looks forward to improving Sora for all creatives.
