Boeing and NASA face challenges ahead of Starliner capsule launch
From CNBC: 2024-05-24 13:05:24
Boeing and NASA are preparing for the launch of the Starliner capsule, despite a “stable” leak in the propulsion system. The mission aims to transport U.S. astronauts to the International Space Station, with a target launch date of June 1. Boeing has faced delays and hefty costs totaling $1.5 billion due to setbacks.
A previous launch attempt was canceled due to an issue with the Atlas V rocket’s valve. Following the postponement, a small helium leak in Starliner was detected, prompting further safety assessments. NASA and Boeing believe the source is a seal in the propulsion system and plan to monitor it leading up to the launch and during the mission.
The leak rate will be reassessed after reaching the International Space Station. NASA is confident in the spacecraft’s ability to manage the leak, having experience with similar situations in past missions. Another review is scheduled for May 29, with the rocket and capsule set to be rolled out for the June 1 launch attempt after the assessment.
