OpenAI introduced Voice mode for ChatGPT in 2023. Users can have voice conversations or give input through voice. Five voice options were added – Breeze, Cove, Ember, Juniper, and Sky. Voice samples were provided by actors, leading to controversy over Sky’s similarity to Scarlett Johansson’s character in “Her.”

Scarlett Johansson criticized OpenAI for using a voice similar to hers without permission in ChatGPT. OpenAI denied imitation and issued an apology. Johansson’s lawyers demanded the voice be taken down. This incident highlights the need for legislation protecting individuals’ image, likeness, and voice from being misused in AI programs.

The Screen Actors Guild recently secured protections against actors’ likenesses being used in AI programs without consent. Regulations like EU’s General Data Protection Regulation offer rights for actors over their personal data, including voice samples. As technology advances, there is a growing need for laws to keep up and protect individuals’ rights in Generative AI.
