Eight US newspapers, including The New York Daily News and The Chicago Tribune, sued OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright violations related to training AI chatbots. The newspapers are owned by Alden Global Capital and accused the tech giants of using their content without permission or payment to develop ChatGPT and Copilot.
OpenAI and Microsoft were accused of offering verbatim excerpts of news articles without consent and attributing misleading information to the publications. The newspapers involved in the suit also include The Orlando Sentinel, The Sun Sentinel, The San Jose Mercury News, The Denver Post, The Orange County Register, and The St. Paul Pioneer Press.
OpenAI stated that they work closely with news organizations and strive to build constructive partnerships. However, several news outlets have entered partnerships with OpenAI, including The Associated Press, Financial Times, Axel Springer, Le Monde, and Prisa Media, instead of taking legal action.
The lawsuit filed by eight US newspapers against OpenAI and Microsoft is similar to a case previously filed by The New York Times. OpenAI argued that using publicly available data, including news articles, for general training purposes is fair use. Microsoft declined to comment on the lawsuit.
