Walmart is laying off hundreds of corporate workers and asking many employees in Dallas, Atlanta, and Toronto to relocate to its Arkansas headquarters. The move aims to bring more employees back to the office post-pandemic. The retailer did not specify how many people were affected by the cuts, with more details expected after their earnings report on Thursday.
In addition to the layoffs, Walmart announced the closure of 51 health clinics in Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, and Texas due to financial sustainability issues. The retailer is the nation’s largest private employer with about 1.6 million employees. Walmart is also building a 350-acre campus in Bentonville which includes office buildings, a hotel, and more facilities.
The company’s Chief People Officer Donna Morris shared a memo explaining the decisions, expressing the importance of collaboration and innovation in person. Walmart aims to strengthen its culture by bringing more employees together. Some relocations will be to the San Francisco Bay Area or Hoboken/New York, with plans to support affected employees in finding new opportunities.
