Weekly AI Recap: Google retools AI Overviews, OpenAI announces safety committee

Google is making modifications to its AI search feature after public backlash over misinformation. The feature, AI Overviews, provides summarized responses to queries but has faced criticism for providing inaccurate and bizarre information. Google is working to improve detection of nonsensical queries and limit the inclusion of satire content.
OpenAI is training a new AI model to succeed GPT-4 and has formed a safety and security committee. The company recently debuted GPT-4o, a model capable of responding to text, audio, and visual cues. Ilya Sutskever and Jan Leike, former superalignment team leaders at OpenAI, have resigned and joined Anthropic.
The Atlantic and Vox Media have signed licensing agreements with OpenAI to provide access to content for training AI models. Financial terms of the deals were not disclosed. Similarly, News Corp recently signed its own multiyear content licensing deal with OpenAI. These partnerships allow publishers to incorporate AI technology into new products.
Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, raised $6 billion in a series B funding round, increasing its valuation to around $24 billion. The company focuses on the chatbot Grok as a competitor to ChatGPT. xAI plans to expand Grok’s capabilities, launch new products, and hire professionals to drive research and development of future technologies.
Nvidia, a leading American chipmaker, is close to overtaking Apple as the world’s second most valuable company. Nvidia’s shares hit a record high, with a valuation of about $100 billion below Apple’s. Microsoft currently holds the title of the most valuable company, driven by investments in OpenAI and commercializing AI products.
