Since its release in November 2022, OpenAI’s ChatGPT has propelled it to household name status. OpenAI, founded in 2015, saw a valuation bump thanks to backing from Peter Thiel, Amazon, and Infosys. OpenAI’s split in 2019 led to a non-profit arm and capped-profit model still in place. Today, OpenAI employs over 2,000 individuals and continues to innovate in the A.I. field.
Significant leadership changes at OpenAI include CEO Sam Altman’s brief firing and reinstatement in 2023, and a new board structure featuring tech, policy, and academia experts. The executive team includes Greg Brockman, a former CTO at Stripe, and Mira Murati, a Tesla alum turned OpenAI CTO.
OpenAI’s new chief scientist, Jakub Pachocki, leads the company’s research team and worked on GPT-4 and OpenAI Five. Sarah Friar recently joined as CFO, bringing experience from Nextdoor and previous roles at Goldman Sachs, Salesforce, and Square.
Strategic officers like Jason Kwon, who was OpenAI’s general counsel before becoming chief strategy officer in 2023, help navigate OpenAI’s competitive landscape. Legal counsel Che Chang and communication chief Hannah Wong also play key roles in the company’s operation.
Alissa Rosenthal, OpenAI’s head of sales, joined in 2022 and manages a sales team focused on AGI. The company’s board includes prominent figures in tech, policy, and academia, including Quora’s Adam D’Angelo and former National Economic Council Director Lawrence Summers. The growing team at OpenAI continues to revolutionize the field of artificial intelligence.
