AI Risk Levels Being Suppressed, Claims Letter From OpenAI And Google DeepMind Employees

Former employees of OpenAI and Google DeepMind have published an open letter asking AI companies to allow employees to raise concerns about technology without fear of retaliation.

The letter, titled “A Right to Warn about Advanced Artificial Intelligence,” has been signed by 13 individuals, including some anonymous signatories fearing repercussions.

Signatories express concerns about AI risks, including inequalities, manipulation, misinformation, and loss of control potentially leading to human extinction.

AI companies currently hold significant non-public information about their systems but have minimal obligations to share with governments or civil society.

Former employees of OpenAI and Google DeepMind, including non-anonymous signers Jacob Hilton, Daniel Kokotajlo, William Saunders, Carroll Wainwright, Daniel Ziegler, Ramana Kumar, and Neel Nanda, support the letter’s principles.

The group requests four key principles: not enforcing agreements prohibiting criticism for risk concerns, facilitating anonymous processes for concerns, supporting open criticism culture, and not retaliating against employees sharing confidential information after other processes fail.
