California’s Labor Commissioner fines Amazon $5.902 million for failing to meet Warehouse Quotas law requirements in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. The law, enacted in 2021, aims to protect workers from undisclosed work quotas that impede rest breaks and safety standards. Amazon argued against needing quotas, leading to thousands of violations detected in two warehouses.

The Labor Commissioner’s Office found Amazon violated the law by not providing employees with written notice of quotas at their warehouses. Penalties were issued for over 59,000 violations, resulting in fines under Labor Code 2699(f). The law defines illegal quotas as those that pressure workers to perform tasks at a specific speed, hindering breaks and safety compliance.

Labor Commissioner highlights the dangers of undisclosed quotas, citing increased pressure on workers to work faster and skipping breaks. The peer-to-peer evaluation system used by Amazon in Riverside and San Bernardino warehouses goes against the Warehouse Quotas law’s principles, potentially leading to higher injury rates and violations.
